Trip Overview:
Help serve a community in need of improving its educational opportunities by working side by side with local students and their families to improve the infrastructure of the community's school, Instituto Mixto de Educación Básica. Participants will be involved in painting walls and desks, and helping construct a new recreational space, as part of a larger renovation project funded by SOS (including upgrades to classrooms' roofs, windows, doors, and more)

This trip will promote solidarity and cross-cultural understanding that will ultimately help reduce poverty and inequality in the world. Each day will be filled with hands-on painting and construction work, playing and sharing with children and cultural excursions. You will learn about local cultural traditions through food, music, testimonies, nature adventures, and visits to colonial towns and historic sites. An integrated opportunity for cultural and Spanish immersion, service and adventure.

Itinerary Highlights Include:
  • Contribute hands-on support to painting of the education centre, installation of a recreational space, and work with local students and community members to develop community murals
  • Build cross-cultural friendships by participating in artistic, recreational, educational, and cultural activities
  • Experience the Chuacruz Cultural Festival (May 1st-5th), a small and unique festival to a village, allowing an opportunity for true cultural immersion

Community Profile:

Chuacruz is a small rural village located in the department of Chimaltenango in Guatemala. The population is predominantly Indigenous and have faced many years of poverty, marginalization and violence leading to several development challenges. There are many community needs to improve infrastructure at the local schools. SOS has held several outreach trips in this community in the past helping improve conditions of the schools and this trip will continue to bring much needed upgrades to their community.
